Chile peppers (Capsicum annuum), which exist in their center of diversity on a domestication gradient from wild forest populations to monocropped plantations, present a unique opportunity to study the limits of environmental tolerance and adaptation. Understanding how chile landraces and their wild relatives have adapted to local conditions will provide insight into best conservation management practices, as well as highlight traits with potential for future crop improvement. By incorporating genotyping-by-sequencing technologies with phenotyping for environmental stress, I am conducting an association study on response to moisture and heat stress in chile landraces collected from southern Mexico.
